Today was yet another long and rough day. We spent the morning in Auschwitz I the camp where 1,100,000 people were killed, 90% of which were Jews. It was extremely disturbing which I would even consider to be an understatement. The exhibition that hit me the most was the one with the personal objects from the victims. There were piles of thousands of shoes, glasses and pots who belonged to victims which just conveyed the enormity of the murders committed during the Holocaust. Even worse for me was the pile of over 2 tons of human hair that was on display. I found this camp to be more disturbing than the other concentration camps that we visited so far because I felt that the other camps portrayed the victims on a more personal level. I thought that Auschwitz just wanted to demonstrate how many crimes were really committed at Auschwitz. It was a very impactful day that I think will stay with me for the rest of my life.
