Today was a relatively short day in comparison to our other days but it was informative and interesting nonetheless. We visited the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw right across from where he synagogue used to be. We got to see where the wall used to be (that separated the Aryans from the Jews that were in the Warsaw Ghetto). Then we went into the Institute and got to speak with the director who told us about Poland during World War II. We were able to see the private archives that contains documents from Jews who lived in the Ghetto. Additionally, there was an exhibit that contains art created by the Jews in the Ghetto. They painted or made drawings to try to preserve and celebrate their culture. Lastly we watched quite a disturbing video about life in the Warsaw Ghetto. To see actual footage of freezing, emaciated people was frankly scary. I think that it opened my eyes and enlightened me about the ghettos because that was something that I hadn't thought about too much before hand. Being in Poland is giving me a new perspective on the Holocaust and it's very interesting to learn more about the Jewish victims considering my Jewish heritage.
